Podcast, Podcast, Listen to It!

By: Colleen Joyce

It has become increasingly apparent that 2020, among many different titles, is the year of podcasts. In the midst of quarantine boredom, people have people more attracted to both making and listening to podcasts. These audio programs have topics that range from lifestyle to true crime, to politics and even conspiracy theories. I wholeheartedly mean this when I say it- there is a podcast for everyone to enjoy. Countless subjects, podcasters, and places to access podcasts have made this statement far easier to exclaim. While there are thousands of podcasts out there, some may have a difficult time knowing where to begin. With that being said, here is a list of five fantastic podcasts, each with a different subject, that can be found on Spotify. Happy listening!

For true crime lovers, listen to Crime Junkie!

The true-crime community has grown exponentially over the course of the past few years. With one Google search, dozens of videos, articles, and podcasts can be found that discuss real-life crimes. Some include unsolved mysteries, open and active cases, and even stories taken straight from news headlines. One of the best true-crime podcasts that examine and share each of these stories is Crime Junkie. Crime Junkie was created by Ashley Flowers and Brit, two childhood friends with a longstanding interest in all things true crime. As a result of their passion for true crime, and some work within the legal system, the two co-founded Crime Junkie as a way to raise awareness for open cases. The two do an exceptional job relaying information to listeners as a way to encourage people to become aware of these cases. Of course, when presenting these sorts of subjects, it is imperative to be respectful towards those involved- but, Ashley and Brit do indeed ensure that their podcast is strictly informative and helpful. If you are interested in these cases, I recommend this podcast in particular!

For a positivity boost, listen to Happy Hour with Gretchen Geraghty!

Gretchen Geraghty, a recent graduate from Boston University and longtime Youtuber, created her podcast Happy Hour a bit over a year ago. Geraghty had always been quite the light in the lifestyle and vlog community and decided to take these skills over to podcasting. In most episodes she talks about a variety of topics- examples may include college, her favorite brands, and some serious topics such as grief- in quite the positive light. Geraghty’s remarkable positivity is a staple to this podcast, which makes it both accessible and enjoyable for all listeners. Additionally, she often has guest speakers who contribute to her positive energy and provide additional stories or experiences that make for a well-rounded episode. If in the mood for something on the lighter side, or you are looking to get into podcasts, Gretchen’s would be your best bet.

For informative analyses, listen to Pod Save America!

Pod Save America is one of my most recent additions to my podcast playlist. Hosted by Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Dan Pfeiffer, and Tommy Vietor, the podcast gives a wonderful analysis of all things political. Interestingly, all three hosts served as aides to the Obama Administration over the duration of his time in office, which makes them a fantastic group to gain insight from. Given our current climate and the upcoming election, this podcast serves as a fantastic resource to gather a variety of analyses for those who may not be incredibly involved in politics. Despite being clearly well-informed, perhaps more than the average person, the hosts do an excellent job making political analysis and politics in general far more accessible. Their explanations are thorough and well-backed, as they use both their own knowledge and the knowledge of other experts in their field. I would highly recommend this podcast if you are looking to get into politics, or are more interested in more serious topics!
