One of the key reasons why many of us look forward to college is because of the number of clubs and extracurriculars that will be available to us. Engaging with campus life is important for students as they are able to participate in their community and create a memorable college experience. However, there seems to be so many fun events and networks to join: Ranging from clubs to volunteer opportunities, it can be difficult to choose the ones that are worth your time and effort.
As a result, our team at College on Tap have included some tips in helping you find the right club for your college experience:
Attend Clubs Week When I went to college, the administrative department would often host a welcoming week dedicated to clubs on campus. During this time, a variety of student-represented groups will host information sessions and set a booth in the main atrium. To understand more about campus life and students’ interests, I highly recommend college students to attend the event and ask questions concerning the membership for potential clubs.
Research about the Clubs you are interested in After attending Clubs Week, make a list of clubs that interest you. For example, if you are into journalism and media, you may want to join Her Campus. Begin to research and ask members in the club about recruitment deadlines and details. By knowing more information about the club and having documents provided, you are able to begin the onboarding and interview process as soon as possible.
Start as a Member before becoming an executive. This is one of the mistakes that I’ve made during my college club application process. For First years, the adjustment to university can be daunting due to the change of structure in academics and social life. Before fully committing yourself to a club, make sure that you know the mission and values inside out. Although there are executive positions for first year students, the best way to find out if the club is a right fit for you is by starting out as a member. In this case, you will be able to see the structure and functions of the club.
If you can’t find any clubs but would love to participate, Volunteer! Volunteering is a great way to engage with the student community. Many campus unions have volunteer programs where students can earn reference letters and awards after participating in community programs for a certain number of hours. Through events and charitable causes, you may also potentially meet individuals who share the same interests as you. This will create long-lasting friendships and memories.
Start your own club! For those who are willing to become the next Elon Musk or Walt Disney, a great way to begin your entrepreneurship experience is by starting your own club in college. Find students who are interested in similar scenarios, create an executive team, and submit a new club proposal to the student union!
Even though choosing clubs may seem like an overwhelming process, it is important to keep in mind that clubs aren’t only there to look good on your resume. If you’re extremely passionate about the club that you are apart of, you will develop friendships with people who support the same missions and values as you. In addition, realize that clubs are not there to burn you out. They act as a hobby and if you are growing discontent from the events, it is best to say that the club was not the right fit for you. However, know that there is always the option of starting your own club and making an impact for other students on your college campus.
