Easiest Plants to have in Your Dorm Room

Over the past few years, plants have become a statement piece in houses and bedrooms to create a bohemian aesthetic. Usually paired with wood furniture and white or beige fabrics, plants will complete the natural look you are going for within a given space. I kill just about any plant I purchase. So I decided to do some research on the easiest plants to care for. Want to create this aesthetic in your college dorm room but kill every plant you buy just like I do? Check out this list for possible plants you can purchase on your next trip to a garden center! Please note, I am not a plant expert. The following information are care plans I have learned from working at a garden center as well as through researching on the internet.

Succulents

Succulents do not require direct sunlight. In fact, when the temperature is 90+ degrees it is better to keep in a shaded area. Do NOT overwater your succulents! Succulents like to be water when their soil is almost completely dry. About once a week should suffice.

Chinese Evergreen

This is another planet that prefers indirect sunlight. Chinese Evergreen are very forgiving if you happen to over or underwater them from time to time. If you have a pet beware of them being around this plant, because it can make them sick after consumption.

Air Plant

Air plants are a great option for having in your dorm room because they require no soil. Soak in water for 30 minutes once per week and let dry completely prior to displaying. These plants require bright, indirect sunlight.

Calathea

Calathea requires indirect sunlight and minimal water. This plant does not like tons of water. If this plant is overwatered, it will "drown." Only water the plant enough to keep it alive. However, when watering, do not do it to the point of the soil being soaked.

Aloe

Another plant that prefers indirect sunlight. The great thing about this plant is it only needs to be watered about every three weeks. Additionally, the aloe can be used topically for sunburns, keeping your hair moist, and clears acne.

ZZ Plant

Another plant that requires minimal water and sunlight. If the soil appears dry at the surface, then give the plant some water. It is better to underwater than overwater this plant. If this plant is overwatered, it will begin to rot.

Orchid

When it comes to watering orchids, stick your finger about 1 inch into the soil. If the soil is damp, the orchid does not require water. If the soil appears to be dry, mist the plant to avoid it drying out.
