Canva? Never Heard of Her

By: Sarah Hardy (Including art work)

If you’re like me, when you started creating your resumé you had no idea where to start. Should it be a Word document? A makeshift PowerPoint slide? If you’ve never heard of Canva, well I am here to tell you that it is a game-changer for not just your resumé, but any online content like posters, Facebook posts, class schedules, and even greeting cards! Canva is a free (yes FREE) website that has hundreds of templates for all your personal and marketing needs.

First, let’s start with the resumé templates. There are dozens of templates that create a clean and professional resumé. You do need to be careful, however, and do your research about what a professional resumé looks like. Some of the templates offer spots for a professional headshot or picture, but including this on a resumé isn’t always the best option. Headshots work well if you are working in an arts position, such as musical theatre/theatre. It’s important to read up on other articles about how to build a strong resumé to make sure your design fits your personality but also stays professional. But beware, not all employers or universities like students who use templates for their resumes. I have found it extremely beneficial to have multiple resumes that I can tweak and tailor to the job I’m applying for.

Now Canva isn’t just for creating the perfect resume to land your dream job. It’s also for making yourself and any of your organizations stand out as well! If you are a part of a club or organization, the templates are perfect for promoting events or recruitment efforts. I’m no graphic design major, but it’s so easy to make your designs look professionally done. They also have premade templates for Instagram posts and Facebook event covers. No more worrying about whether or not your design is going to get cropped out of the Instagram feed. As someone who is working school-based jobs, I love using Canva for posters as well as official assignments. I’ve attached a few of my Canva designs to show you just how versatile the platform is. Something I actually love about Canva is that most of the templates already have information filled in, so it’s easy to visualize your ideas replacing what’s there. There is a Canva Pro option for those of you who want more access to stickers and backgrounds, but for me I am happy with everything the free version has to offer.
